What is Clube and who's the gaffer???

Clube is a football (soccer) club run by mates for mates.  We believe in playing football together in a spirit of open friendship.  We welcome new players as new friends and keep in touch with former players all across the world. Clube was created by Andrew Butterworth, Ben Davison, Pat Clifton, Shaun Boyd and Cam MacLennan.  A group of guys who were housemates, uni mates and dating housemates/sisters.  We wanted to play indoor soccer (Futsal) as a way to get a bit fitter and have some fun. That was 7 years ago.

As you'd know every team needs a name and ours came courtesy of Nike.  Clube was the name of a type of Futsal ball.  Yellow and Blue the Clube ball, the tattered remains of which reside in Andrew Butterworth's house, remains the first true founding document of Clube and continues to influence our colours, logo and style. Inside 12 months of our first Futsal game, thanks to Andrew Butterworth's organisational skills, Ben's coaching and the guys abilities Clube had 3 Futsal teams and was in discussions to launch a "proper" 11 a side team in a local league.

"We play for fun.  And winning is more fun than losing."  The motto we play under at Clube.  It speaks to why we play football.  Clube is not a professional club.  Its a club of mates.  Today only Andrew and Ben remain of the original founders but many long standing players are still around Nate Simpson, Daniel Weiss, Nick Banfai, James Flynn and others are veterans of 5 or more seasons with Clube.

Clube relies on, not just these veterans but also, new players to make a contribution to the club.  To help with gear, to help set up, to help pack down, to organise events, to upload rego forms, to pick up shirts etc etc.  The good news is that with many hands the workload is lighter.
There is no parents committee, no supporter group, no wives and girlfriends club to do the work for us.  It is our club.  Yours, mine and the next guys.  If we don't do the work then no one will.  And then there won't be a club to play for.

As the only guy in the founding group to have played outdoor football (briefly as high as the old NSL) and Futsal (underage Australian squad) I was made coach of Clube.  For all but one season of Clube's existence its been my great privilege and responsibility to lead, guide and develop the players, the strategy, the tactics and the results of the mighty Clube Army.

7 years later life has moved on for all of us.  Work responsibilities are more intense, family pressures start to take their toll and time is less available for the things we love to do.  Clube is my passion.  I love it.  I love its ethos, its history, its players and its future.  And I won't suffer anyone who doesn't.  I'm not asking players to commit their lives to Clube.  (Many of our former players play state league or in leagues overseas).  I'm demanding that when players are training or playing for Clube they give everything they have.  They respect the shirt, their team mates, themselves and me.  We don't have much time together to train so when we do give me 100% or you're just wasting my time and your own.

Clube has been successful.  We win games, trophies and awards.  We win them because we are organised, play to our strengths and play as a team.  Prima Donnas will not be tolerated.  No one is bigger than the club.  We play for fun and winning is more fun than losing unless you hate your team mates.  Clube is firstly a team of mates, friends coming together to play football.  Winning comes after.

In 2014 Clube will have 2 teams in the MCSA.  We have never had a season without a trophy.  This year I know we can continue that streak.

In my next blog I'll talk about the way we play football at Clube and what 2014 holds in store for us all.
