Drill #1 (Handling / Distribution + General Warmup)
With a goalkeeper partner, practice your handling and distribution (roll throw) from approximately 4 meters distance, attempt 20 from each arm (stronger first then weaker) and catch / smother at your chest level.
EXTENSION: Try another 20 but this time catch higher in the air (arms raised and hands catching the ball in the W position - from 1.26 in the video). Move further apart and kick the ball; focusing on hitting the target (your partner's chest) and smothering the ball with your chest / arms when receiving. |
With your partner (using 2 footballs), practice throwing (underarm scooping action) and catching at the same time.
Stand approximately 4 meters apart and concentrate on improving your hand-eye coordination and peripheral vision. Attempt 20 and when completed, increase the distance between partners to increase the difficulty. FOCUS: Looking at where you're releasing the ball and quickly visualising where the ball is arriving from. |
Using 7 cones, start at the first and slowly make your way up to the last cone as your partner gently side foots the ball parallel to the cones; forcing you to make a slow, outward reach save on the ground.
Do this slowly and at your own pace; stretch before and focus on gathering + securing the ball towards your chest. Once you've completed your set, switch with your partner. EXTENSION: Have your partner throw the ball in the air and attempt a controlled, diving save in the air. Focus on landing safely and keeping control of the ball. |
Drill #2 (Crossing / Collecting + Talking)
Use with 3 goalkeepers (or modify with 2 to basic crossing / return passing). Player A stands in the goal (commanding the box), Player B & Player C are positioned out on the wing and supply the ball as shown.
Player B crosses the ball into Player A who catches and distributes on the ground (punt kicks later set) to Player C. Player C then aerial passes to Player B (attempting to be as accurate / hitting Player B who catches the ball). Rotate positions. FOCUS: Accuracy, jump timing & communication. |
Drill #3 (Shot Stopping / Agility)
For 2 - 3 goalkeepers (if 3, rotate taking turns as Player B).
Player A stands in goal while Player B takes 10 turns of either striking the ball from the ground (6 yard box) or punting from his hands towards the goal. Player A attempts to save (tipping over, collecting or pushing wide), tally up the saves and create a percentage - then switch positions and attempt to beat your training partner's best tally. FOCUS: clearing the ball from the area when saving, landing safely and reading the ball's flight. |
