Clube are thrilled to announce that Andrew Butterworth has been honoured with life membership of Clube.
Butters was instrumental in founding the club and has been a player, president and manager. Former and current players spoke at the Awards Night about Butters' immeasurable impact on the club.
A speech sent in my former player and manager Ben Davison perhaps summarises it best.
Clube would not exist without Andrew Butterworth. The MCSA would not be the vibrant multicultural football league it is today without Andrew Butterworth. Butters started Clube when he convinced me, our housemate Cam, our other housemate’s partner Pat and his brother in law Shaun to play some Futsal.
What started as a way to run around and have a bit of fun quickly grew, and grew, into a powerhouse of football. I’d been burnt out by football but Butters promised we would only keep going if we were having fun. Well, we kept winning and winning is more fun than losing. As Clube grew so to did the demands on our founding President. But Butters always stepped up. He backed me as manager, even when we struggled, he didn’t second guess the managers he appointed but was always open to being consulted.
Managers, like me, built teams. We chased wins and trophies. And occasionally we battled to avoid relegation. We love the club but we are always focussed on this season and maybe thinking about the next. Clube is still here even though only one of the founders is still active, and will continue despite Butters retiring, because he built a football club. It is an extraordinary thing for a person to have done.
The personal commitment Butters has shown to Clube is beyond anything I’ve ever seen from someone who derives no financial benefit and for most of his time didn’t even get on the field of play! Butters has shaped Clube, the MCSA and the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of young men. Sometimes in ways that are obvious to see but often quietly and outside the spotlight. We are all fortunate to have had Butters in our lives.
Clube exists because of Butters and because of Butters Clube will continue to exist without him at the helm. Congratulations mate, enjoy the time with your family and I look forward to us standing together on the sidelines cheering on the team at the next cup final.
Clube celebrated the short-lived 2021 season with our traditional awards night at Harlow Bar.
A fantastic night was had by all after the premature end to the season due to covid.
